  5. 2. Irony/contradiction - the word as art

  6. Helps to describe the distinct characteristics of an artist’s practice • Cubist painters integrated letters and words, painted and found, into stilllifes and Dadaists used playful linguistic manipulations • It can be used in multiple ways: as narrative, as instruction, as statement, as sculpture, in literary and poetic forms, as recorded speech, and as the matter or object of the artwork itself. • Artists such as Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger have appropriated the message as their medium, placing provocative, often highly politicised statements in public places

  7. The physical impossibility of death in the mind of someone living – (Damien Hirst) • We avoid risks in life so we can make it safely to death • how can a person give you so much strength yet still be your only weakness? • if everything I say is a lie, am I telling you the truth when I say I'm lying? • If you didn't get caught, did you really do it?
