ACTIVELY FOR THE INTERFERENCE ESTABLISH INDUSTRY MONITORING MECHANISMS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NGOS AND ACADEMIA
EDUCATE Watch for the tobacco industry • Governments and NGOS should inform and educate the public and their staff about the role of the tobacco industry and the tactics the industry utilizes to oppose or derail tobacco control measures
TRANSPARENCY IS THE KEY • All operations and activities of the tobacco industry should be transparent: • how much money the tobacco industry makes in the country, • how much they spend on marketing (for example, advertisement, sponsorship and promotions) and CSR initiatives. • Do not accept funds or contributions from the tobacco industry BIG TOBACCO
TRANSPARENCY IS THE KEY • Tobacco industry representatives should have very limited access to government personnel and elected officials and when interactions occur, they should be transparent and records made publicly available. • Establish a conflict of interest policy and a code of conduct for public officials BIG TOBACCO
CONCLUSIONS • PROBLEM: The tobacco industry actively works to undermine tobacco control efforts • SOLUTION: Stop tobacco industry interference by implementing the WHO FCTC Article 5.3 and its guidelines • WHAT CAN DO NOW:
THREE THINGS TO ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND • It is not always obvious that it is tobacco industry interference • It is not always in tobacco control or even in health • It happens at all levels – from global to local.
