Venezuela’s Economy • Current GINI: .41 (56th in World) • Unemployment Rate: 8.5% (100th in World) • According to Google Data Explorer, Venezuela GDP Growth Rate over last 5 years is -21% • Economy Is stimulated 55% by oil • Main sources of revenue are construction vehicles, petroleum, and food processing

  6. Venezuelan Art • Art is a very important cultural aspect of Venezuela • It is very important to the people, and is held in a high regard • The art is very vibrant, getting its influence from the Caribbean countries.

  7. Hugo Chavez • 56th Dictator of Venezuela, in power since 1999 • Formerly a soldier • Became a politician and, “the symbol of anti-american sentiment in Latin America.” • Promised to make changes to benefit the poor. Moving toward “left-wing.” • Because of “left-wing” migration, ties with U.S are fragile • Relationship is necessary • U.S. imports large amounts of oil from Venezuela • BUT Hugo Chavez called George Bush “the devil,” at a U.N. Meeting

  8. Issues • Environmental Destruction • Deforestation • Earthquakes • Soil Degradation from oils and mining • This causes a loss of arable land for the agricultural communities. • Human Trafficking: Venezuelan government does not associate with it, which will cause a risen crime rate • Drugs • Dealers and distributors have been crossing the Colombian border and doing business with the Colombians. This could both increase the crime rate, and weaken or strengthen ties between Columbians and Venezuelans. (More likely to cause problems)
