How do we classify animals according to their physical characteristics?
What we will cover today: • Animal characteristics • How they survive in their environment • Mammals • Birds • Amphibians
Mammals: • Have a backbone • Usually furry • Have 4 legs • Give birth to live young- nurse • Usually look like parents- reproduce • Example: cats and dogs
Mammals: How do they survive in their environment? • Camouflage: color or shape that makes an animal hard to see • Mammals blend in with their environment • They adapt to their environment
Birds: • Have bills, beaks, and feathers • Have a backbone • Have 2 legs • Lay eggs • Have wings • Example: parrots, penguins, ostrich
Birds: How do they survive in their environment? • Many birds are adapted to fly • Feathers on the wings are protection • Penguins do not fly, but swim! • Wings can help migrate and camouflage
Amphibians: • Have backbone • Have 4 legs or no legs • Live in land and water • Moist, slimy skin and no scales • Lay eggs in water • Breathe with gills and lungs • Example: salamanders, frogs, toads
Amphibians: How do they survive in their environment? • Wet skin assists frogs in water • Toads have rough hard covering to dig deep and avoid the heat! • Tree frogs scare with their eyes
