This week Monday: I CAN solve and graph inequalities by addition and subtraction Tuesday: I CAN solve and graph inequalities by multiplication and division Wednesday: I CAN solve and graph two step inequalities Thursday: I CAN solve and graph multistep equations Friday: I CAN solve inequalities using the calculator and complete the exit slip
Today Objective: I CAN solve multi-step inequalities Homework: None
Inequalities vs. Equations We solve inequalities the same way we solved equations We use inverse operations to isolate the variable
Remember the rule from yesterday? Rule: Whenever you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a negative number you REVERSE the direction of the sign.
Example #1 Who can remember Variable on both sides from equations? 1. Get all the variables to one side 2. Get all the numbers to the other side
Let’s rewrite the solution Sometimes it is easier to have the variable on the left
Graph and Check your solution -19.5 Check: Let n=-20
Let’s rewrite the solution Sometimes it is easier to have the variable on the left
Graph and Check your solution -1 Check: Let n=-2
Example #3 Whenever you reach a false statement, there is NO SOLUTION
No solution Can be written as:
Rest of class • Pick up where you left off yesterday: card A, Card B, card C…. If you finished, write your own inequality word problem that will be on the next TEST
