Subphylum Crustacea • The majority of marine arthropods are crustaceans. • Includes crabs, shrimps, lobsters, and many less familiar animals. • Their appendages are specialized for swimming, crawling, attaching to other animals, mating, and feeding. • Crustaceans posses two pairs of antennae to sense their surroundings. • There are 68,000 known species of crustaceans, but there can be up to 150,000 unknown species.
Decapods • Decapods have ten legs. Such as shrimps, crabs and lobsters. • Decapods are the largest crustaceans in size. • They have claws for defense and feeding. • There are two parts of a decapod, the Cephalothorax and the abdomen. • Shrimps and lobsters have long abdomens or “tails”. • In crabs the abdomen is very compact and hidden in the cephalothorax.
Feeding and Digestion Most small crustaceans filter feed. Decapods have maxillipeds to sort the food and push it towards the mouth.
Nervous System & Reproduction • Crustaceans have a simple nervous system. • They have a small brain. • They have a good sense of smell. • The male uses specialized appendages to transfer the sperm directly to the female.
Decapods and Shrimps • Decapods, meaning “ten legs”, are the largest group of crustaceans • Shrimps, lobsters, and crabs fall under this category • Each of these creatures has a cephalothorax, which is the anterior portion of the body; the rest of the body is the abdomen • Shrimps have laterally compressed bodies with distinct abdomens • Shrimps are also scavengers, feeding off of the sea floor or the skin of other fish • They also swim by using sweeping motions of the tail and have special swimmerets, small appendages along the abdomen
Trade Name: Marine Shrimp Scientific Name: Parapenaeopsisstylifera Scientific Names of Shrimp Trade Name: Brown Shrimp Scientific Name: Metapenaeusdobsoni
Crabs • In crabs, the abdomen is small and tucked under the compact cephalothorax • What’s distinct about crabs is their abdominal differences regarding gender • In males, the abdomen is visible as a V-shaped plate; in females, it is U-shaped and expanded for carrying eggs • Crabs also move sideways when they’re in a hurry • They make up the largest and most diverse group of decapods • Crabs have ten jointed appendages, including two large claws for food capture, called chelipeds, and eight walking legs
Trade Name: Sea Crab Scientific Name: Portunussanguinolentus Scientific Names of Crabs Trade Name: Mud Crab Scientific Name: Scylla serrata
Like crabs, they have ten appendages, two claws, and 8 walking legs A lobster can distinctly snap its tail to propel itself quickly backward- this is often used as a defensive mechanism against predators They have sensory hairs on various parts of their body to detect motion Most lobsters are nocturnal and hide during the day in rock or coral crevices They are also scavengers that crush molluscs and sea urchins Lobsters Trade Name: Spiny Lobster Scientific Name: Panulirus spp. Trade Name: Sand Lobster Scientific Name: Thenusorientalis
Habitat and Symmetry Arthropods are very special creatures because they have species in the ocean and in lakes, in the air and on land. (benthic, pelagic, and some parasitic.) They also have a bilateral symmetry. This means that if you were to cut down the center of a arthropod both sides would match up.
Personal Evaluation • “I learned that Arthropods can be found on land and in the ocean. And I think its interesting they are a diverse group that contain thousands of species.” -Amber Sorters • “I learned the difference between male and female crabs and how shrimp avoid predators with there quick tail movement.” -Arielle Hemmons • Blah blah blah -Anthony Carpenter • Personal Evaluation: Each person in the group must include what they learned about this phylum and what they found interesting about their lifestyle.
