Life of Dalí Nació el 11th de Mayo de 1904. He was born in the town of Figures in Catalonia, Spain. Hijo de Salvador Dalí í Cusí and Felipa Domenech Ferres. He had an older brother who died before Dalí was born. He also has a younger sister. At 5 years of age his parents took Dalí to see his brothers grave and it was here that they told him that he was is brothers reincarnate. His mother died when he was 16 and his farther then married his wife’s sister. • “Premature ossification of a station”
Life of Dalí continued… In 1916 Dalí discovered modern painting. The following year his farther organized an exhibition of his charcoal drawings in their family home. In 1919 Dalí had his first public exhibition. In 1922 Dalí moved in to the “Residencia de Estudiantes” in Madrid. This was the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. Dalí became close friends with poet Federico Garcío Lorca. As well as filmmaker Luis Buňuel. In 1926 Dalí went to Paris, France where he met Pablo Picasso. Life of Dalí continued… In 1936 Dalí took part in the International Surrealist Exhibition. When Francisco Franco came to power after the Spanish Civil War, Dalí’s political views were different then that of his fellow Surrealists. He was then expelled from the predominantly Marxist Surrealist group. In 1940 Dalí and Gala moved to the United States as the war began in Eurpoe. Life of Dalí continued… Late in his career Dalí began to experiment with many unusual or novel media and processes. In 1960 Dalí began to work on the Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dalí. This was his main focus though 1974. In 1982 King Juan Carlos of Spain gave Dalí the title Marquis of Pubol. He then returned the favor by giving the King a drawing entitled Head of Europa. • “Meditative rose”
Life of Dalí continued… On June 10, 1982 Gala died. After her death Dalí moved to the castle of Pubol which he had bought for Gala. After the death of his wife, Dalí attempted to commit suicide by dehydration. Also in 1984 a fire broke out in his bedroom under unclear circumstance. This was thought to be another suicide attempt. Salvador Dalí later died in his home town of Figures on January 23, 1989. Dalí was 84 years old. He was buried in the crypt if his Teatro Museo in Figures. “Simulacrum Feigned”
Dalí made over 1500 paintings, as well as illustrations for books, lithographs, designs for theater sets and customs, drawings, sculptures, other projects and a Disney animated cartoon. One of Dalí’s most well known art works is The Persistence of Memory in1931. WORKS
