  2. What is Assistive Technology? • Assistive technology is any device or service that helps a student with a disability participate in a general education setting while meeting IEP (individualized education plan) goals. • Assistive technology ranges from simple to high tech devices.

  3. What is Assistive Technology? • Assistive Technology can support communication, academic performance, mobility, and access of materials. • The overall purpose of assistive technology is to improve the functional performance of an individual with a disability.

  4. Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA) • IDEA describes assistive technology devices as “any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child.” • IDEA describes assistive technology services as “any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.”

  5. Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA) • Under the IDEA of 2004, schools are required to consider assistive technology devices when developing and adapting IEPs for students with disabilities. • All schools are required to provide students with access to needed assistive technology.

  6. Assistive Technology for Hearing Impaired • A hearing aid is shaped to comfortably fit the ear, and includes three parts: microphone, amplifier, and receiver. • Hearing aids help students with hearing impairments hear more clearly, because sounds are amplified and can be adjusted by the wearer.

  7. Assistive Technology for Vision Impaired • Braille printers take information from a computer and emboss the Braille onto paper. • Braille printers enable visually impaired students to read the documents that their classmates can visually read.

  8. Assistive Technology for Learning Disabled • Text-reading software is designed to help individuals who have reading disabilities. This type of software presents text as speech. • Text-reading software helps reading fluency and comprehension.

  9. Assistive Technology for Physically Disabled • A head pointer helps individuals with physical disabilities, particularly limited hand use. • A head pointer supports students in writing, turning pages, or activating switches. • The head piece fits around the individual’s head and includes a metal pointer that can be fitted with various holders such as a pencil holder.
