Big Ideas for the class • Champlain founded the colony of Quebec. • He wanted a strong relationship with the First Nations people. • Military and Trading partnership.
French Settlement Cartier’s failed to establish a colony for France. France still enjoyed the resource of fish France also traded goods with the First Nations people.
Samuel De Champlain Champlain believed that Canada could be profitable. In 1608, Champlain established a habitation called Quebec. Champlain allied with a small band of First Nations against the Iroquois. Habitation: Residence

Relationship Between Champlain and the Small Band of First Nations People -Trade Alliance -Military Alliance -Safety for both parties
Trade Alliance For the Small Band of First Nations People, the trade brought tools and weapons. For Champlain and the French, the trade brought furs. Both parties realized the importance of their relationship with each other.
They agreed not to trade any furs with English. • The tools by the French, made life easier for the First Nations People.
Military Alliance The Iroquois War began in 1609. The French provided firearms to help win several battles. Champlain also provided 300 men.
Huron Alliance Champlain realized the more trade alliances the better. The Hurons were great fur traders. Champlain was eager to form an alliance with the Hurons. Alliance: Partnership
The alliance with the Huron made the Small Band ofFirst Nations peoples band concerned. • The Huron supplied most of the beaver furs along the St. Lawerence.
Back At Quebec Champlain struggled to keep his venture going. The company was making good money from furs. France had little interest in building a settlement.

The Colony Is Attacked The English and his former alliance of Small Band of First Nations People attacked the French colony. Champlain was captured and taken prisoner. His former First Nations allies were unhappy with his relationship with the Huron.
Champlain would eventually be freed. • He went back to his colony “Quebec” • He began a power fur trade company called “The Company of Hundred Associates”
Conclusion/Big Ideas • Champlain established Quebec • He realized creating an alliance with the First Nations People was essential • For both military and trading purposes • Too many First Nations alliance led to his downfall.
