Objectives • At the conclusion of this lecture, the student will be able to: • define terms associated with immunizations • list the diseases and their schedule for immunization • describe the general side effects, adverse reactions and contraindications for each immunization • differentiate among the communicable childhood diseases
Objectives- continued • Describe nursing interventions related to the following goals for a child with a communicable disease: • prevention of the spread of infection • prevention of complications • provision of comfort • support of child and family • Outline a plan of nursing care for a child who is maltreated • Outline a plan of care to prevent common injuries in the pediatric population
Immunizations • Know the definitions of the following terms: • Immunization • Immunity • natural • acquired • passive • active • Vaccines • attenuated
Immunizations- terms cont. • Toxoid • Antibody Antigen • Immune Globulin
Immunizations • Premature infants • HepB • Diptheria, Tetanus, Pertussis • Polio
Immunizations- continued • Measles, Mumps, Rubella • HiB • Varicella
Immunizations- Side Effects • HepB • 3 injections, well tolerated, low incidence of side effects • DPT • fever (may be as high as 40.5 degrees C) • soreness and redness at injection site • Malaise • Adverse reactions: • urticaria, convulsions, anaphylaxis
Immunizations- Side Effects • Polio • no side effects • Adverse effects- paralysis (very rare) • MMR • same as the side effects of DPT, in addition mild rash and arthralgia- these may occur up to 10 days post immunization • Adverse effects--encephalitis • Varivax • same as DPT but also may develop a maculopapular rash
