MSDS Material Safety Data Sheet
The Global Harmonization System (GHS) is a product of the United Nations that embodies an international approach to hazard communication using an agreed upon criteria for classifying hazardous chemicals and a standardized method to communicate the hazards through use of container labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
About MSDS A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that contains information on the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity and environmental) and how to work safely with the chemical product. It is an essential starting point for the development of a complete health and safety program.
Contents of the MSDS Section 1—Identification: Product identifier, manufacturer or distributor name, address, phone number, emergency phone number, recommended use, and restrictions on use. Section 2—Hazard(s) identification: All hazards regarding the chemical and required label elements. Section 3—Composition/Information on ingredients: Information on chemical ingredients and trade secret claims. Section 4—First-aid measures: Required first aid treatment for exposure to a chemical and the symptoms (immediate or delayed) of exposure. Section 5—Fire-fighting measures: The techniques and equipment recommended for extinguishing a fire involving the chemical and hazards that may be created during combustion. Section 6—Accidental release measures: Steps to take in the event of a spill or release involving the chemical. Includes: emergency procedures, protective equipment and proper methods of containment and cleanup. Section 7—Handling and storage: Precautions for safe handling and storage, including incompatibilities. Section 8—Exposure controls/Personal protection: OSHA’s permissible exposure limits (PELs), threshold limit values (TLVs),
Contents of the MSDS Section 9—Physical and chemical properties: The chemical’s characteristics. Section 10—Stability and reactivity: Chemical stability and possible hazardous reactions. Section 11—Toxicological information: Routes of exposure (inhalation, ingestion, or absorption contact), symptoms, acute and chronic effects, and numerical measures of toxicity. Section 12—Ecological information: How the chemical might affect the environment and the duration of the effect. Section 13—Disposal considerations—describes safe handling of wastes and methods of disposal, including the disposal of any contaminated packaging. Section 14—Transportation information—includes packing, marking, and labeling requirements for hazardous chemical shipments. Section 15—Regulatory information—indicates regulations that apply to chemical. Section 16—Other information—includes date of preparation or last revision.

What are the steps in having an MSDS or label review authored? • A non-disclosure agreement is signed with the client, if desired. • Authoring Service provider receives the required product information from the client. • The authoring phase for the project begins. The client is contacted if any additional information is required. • Authoring team prepares the MSDS or label review using with the proprietary authoring software in conjunction with a number of health and safety databases. • After an MSDS or label review is prepared, it is inspected by a senior analyst and at least one other author, before being sent to the client. • Authoring service provider makes necessary edits to document based on client feedback.
National Regulations Governing SDSs/MSDSs: India The responsibility of India’s chemical regulations for Material Safety Data Sheet authoring falls under the Ministry of Environment & Forests, and Department of Environment, Forests and Wildlife. The regulations for SDS authoring are found in the Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rules 1989, which amended the “Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rules” S.O. 966 27 Nov 1989. The specific layout for an SDS is outlined in schedule 9 of the rule.

Tests needed at The SDS writing lab at MSDS Authoring Services Laboratory & Equipment , Expertise : available in Pollution Control Boards The physical and chemical properties that are commonly tested for finished products or compounds’ chemical SDS typically range from pH, odor, boiling point, solubility in water, specific gravity, melting point, freezing point, evaporation rate, auto ignition temperature, flash point, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and vapor pressure.
Benefit from the domain-knowledge expertise Be it authoring or converting it to comply with national or international standards, the MSDS preparation is a tedious process as it requires thorough knowledge of the latest rules and regulations of the respective governments. And amending the MSDS form frequently to comply with the new regulations of the government is again a demanding task. Therefore, MSDS authoring service providers manage a trained team of experts with the required expertise to stay abreast of the changing policies and regulations.
