Discussion Questions • 1. (p. 25) Tim says there are “six sides” to the argument about the war. Which side would you choose and why? Use textual evidence to explain and support your opinion. • 2. (p. 22) Tim says something bad is going to happen…what do you predict? • 3. (p. 27) Describe how Tim feels about Sam and explain why. Do you agree with the father or Sam? • 4. How does the conflict between Sam and his father mirror the larger conflict in the novel? • 5. What role does religion play in the lives of the colonists (p. 29). Would you let religion sway you? Why/why not? • 6. What is happening in the relationship between Tim and Sam? Describe how it has changed. • 7. Come up with 2 questions to ask the class based on what we have read.
How To Guidelines • 1. Neat and illustrated Cover • 2. Table of Contents • 3. At least seven clear steps (ingredients if you are cooking) • 4. Safety Information/Tips on what to do if something goes wrong • 5. At least 3 text features (ex: glossary, bold words, bullets etc.) • 6. Check your presentation day!

Big Goal • The goal for each reading group is to grow by two years in reading comprehension by the end of the school year! • The more you read the faster you will grow! • Captains: Guided Reading Log • Guided reading book drop off at end of class • Keep your group in check or consequences will follow

Diary #1 • Must include: • 1. Works Cited page: 2 websites Notes One other source (textbook/book/newspaper/interview 2. Two front pages written in blue/black ink OR 1.5 pages typed (printed out, 12pt font, double spaced, Times New Roman) 3. Written in the FIRST PERSON 4. At least three in-text citations (Cite all facts!) 5. Any extra creative things you want to add (letters, drawings, extra writing, dialect etc.)
Research • 1. Research into at least two websites and collect facts for your diary • 2. Start writing your diary (Only type if you have access to a printer!) • 3. You can put your name/period at the top or at the bottom it is your choice. Remember you need to cite your facts in text AND on the works cited page!!!
