Pharmaceutical Issue Healthcare Reform Expands Women’s Wellness
Contraception, emergency contraception & contraception counseling without co-pay • Well-woman visits without co-pay • Gestational diabetes screening • HPV DNA testing • STI screening • Domestic violence screening Affordable Care Act
Will take effect August 1, 2012 • Medicine and services at no cost will only be offered to insured women • Applies to all NEW health insurance plans Affordable Care Act (cont.)
49% of all pregnancies in 2001 were unintended; 42% of those unintended pregnancies ended in abortion • Providing birth control to women will help prevent some of these unintended pregnancies, especially in poor and low-income women most at risk for unintended pregnancy • Preventive care could reduce overall health care costs Potential Benefits
Since patients will be getting medicine and services for free, insurance companies will have to absorb the cost: health insurance premiums could go up • Some people may not be able to afford increased premiums • Ethical concerns for religious pharmacists and doctors Potential Consequences
Why is preventive care and medicine so important? • How will providing contraception and emergency contraception affect insured women? Uninsured? • How will this law affect pharmacists? Questions to Consider
