Contracts executed between 2005 and 2007 • 60% of SMEs receive more than 75% of their turnover from road maintenance works, • 20% of SMEs receive between 50% and 75% of their turnover from road maintenance works, • 20% of SMEs receive between 20% and 50% of their turnover from road maintenance works, the rest from the building sector.

Diagnostic study of 20 SMEs • Identified weaknesses of SMEs in road maintenance • lack of vision on the market place and lack of focus on corporate strategy; • lack of analysis and diagnosis of the business (due to lack of time or ignorance of its significance); • failure in monitoring operations and control costs; • lack of proper financial management systems; • Lack of proper management systems for human resources and materials; • Business development plan unrealistic (or non-existent) • identified capacity-building needs of SMEs in management and formulate training modules (see collaboration with the International Institute of Engineering, Water, Environment and the Infrastructure (2iE Ouagadougou)
