Native American Removal Chapter 7 Section 3
1. Some whites wanted to displace Native Americans 2. Some whites wanted to assimilate Native Americans into white culture: • Speak English • Pray in Church • Eat meals at regular times • Grow wheat instead of corn • Dress in white man’s clothing (European style) = political and social equals
Five Civilized Tribes • Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole, Creek, & Chickasaw • Lived in southeastern part of US • Whites wanted that land for farming & mining
1. Seminole 2. Creek 3. Choctaw 4. Chickasaw 5. Cherokee
Indian Removal Act 1830 • Jackson didn’t think assimilation would work • Allowing Native Americans to remain in homelands = too many troops for protection • Only solution = removal to west of Mississippi River • Federal gov’t. provided funds to negotiate treaties for westward removal
Worcester v. Georgia 1832 • Cherokee Nation won recognition as a distinct political community • Georgia couldn’t control the Cherokee or invade their lands • Jackson didn’t uphold Supreme Court decision
Cherokee leader John Ross tried to fight Georgia in court, but other Cherokees promoted relocation • Treaty of New Echota 1835: gave 8 million acres of Cherokee land to federal gov’t • Cherokees got money & land west of Miss. River • 1838: 20,000 Cherokees lived east of Miss. River = forced removal
Trail of Tears • Began October and November 1838 • 20,000 Cherokees forced to travel 800+ miles to Oklahoma Territory in groups of 1,000 people • Traveled partly by steamboat & railroad – mostly by foot • Robbed by troops and outlaws • Took 3-4 months • > ¼ died of disease and cold • Given bad land
