Arkansas Research and Education Optical Network ARE-ON is a high-speed fiber-based optical communications network and associated applications established and operated by a consortium of public four-year universities in Arkansas. ARE-ON is governed by the presidents and chancellors of participating institutions, in cooperation with the Arkansas Department of Higher Education

Guiding Principles • ARE-ON is an economic development asset for the state of Arkansas • ARE-ON is a collaborative environment that empowers every member of the community • ARE-ON is a link between cyberinfrastructure initiatives in the state of Arkansas and the global research and education community • ARE-ON does not encourage or facilitate the use of state funds to compete with the commercial provider community

  4. ARE-ON Core Agendas • Research – basic and applied • Academic – scaling ARE-ON resources across the curriculum • Healthcare – telehealth/telemedicine support • Emergency Preparedness – supporting and developing applications that save lives

Faculty Applications • ARE-ON empowers faculty to create and share media-rich curriculum content at delivery speeds far beyond the traditional experience • ARE-ON allows faculty to access computing resources otherwise unavailable to the traditional classroom for use in virtual learning environments and content-specific projects • ARE-ON provides faculty with access to shared content repositories as both contributors and consumers of peer reviewed shared content objects

Faculty Applications • ARE-ON empowers faculty to involve students in high speed simulations and other digital learning environments in real-time. • ARE-ON provides faculty opportunities to collaborate with fellow content experts through national and international initiatives such as MERLOT, the Digital Marketplace, and the MIT Open Knowledge/Open Courseware initiatives • ARE-ON is not a network, ARE-ON is a powerful new academic resource for current and future instructional professionals
