Using Astra for Campus Security Emma L. Miller Director, Office of Space Management University of Texas at Brownsville
The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College • Serves more than 15,000 students in the Brownsville metropolitan area and broader South Texas region. • Located on the border with Mexico (Matamoros, Tamaulipas).
Campus Security Issues New campus security measures have been implemented as a result of : • Having the campus located right next to the Mexican border has resulted in border violence spilling over . • Recent nationwide campus shootings
New Security Measure The Office of Space Management implemented a new space security policy with the Provost’s approval. • All campus faculty, staff, and students are required to submit an Astra facility request if they plan to use any facility after hours (8 am – 5 pm) or weekends. This new policy assists Campus Police in determining who is on campus in order to help them when a risk arises.
Campus Buy-in • It was not easy to obtain campus buy-in. Particular resistance came from faculty who were used to come and go without notifying anybody. • Campus Police is key in identifying those that are not complying. If a user is not listed on their daily reports, they are asked to leave campus. If a user failed to submit a request, I will receive an email or call from Campus Police for approval. I will review the request and then approve /deny it; however, I make sure to notify the user that they must submit a facility request next time.
Campus Benefits • The campus has benefited from the new policy. 1) All users are complying 2) Campus Police can quickly assess who is on campus should an emergency arise.
