Lecture Time & Place • MF 12:30-1:20 pm in Avery 108 • Note: except for the final project presentation during the 15th week, the class won’t meet on Wednesdays • Instead, on Wednesdays, I will often meet with individual student to give guidance on your upcoming presentation
Office/Project Group Meeting Hours • For the first five weeks: • Office hours: MF 2:30-4pm and by appointment • From the 6th week on: • Weekly meeting with each project group • Office hours only by appointment
Paper Review I • Each week • Read two papers • For each paper, write one page summary to state • the contributions of the paper • your critique of the paper (such as what you liked and didn’t like about the paper) • opportunities for future work on the topic
Paper Review II • Each week • Email the summary of the paper to me before the day of the class when we will discuss the paper • Email subject: 496/896 SUMMARY • Email body: the title of the paper • Include your name and the title of the paper in the summary
Student Presentation I • For the whole semester, each student will • Give two/three (most likely two) paper presentations in class and lead the in-class discussion of the papers
Student Presentation II • If you will present a paper on Friday • Submit your slides to me on Tuesday • Meet me 12:30-1:20pm Wednesday in my office (106 Schorr Center) to discuss the slides • If you will present a paper on Monday • Submit your slides to me on Thursday • Meet me Friday (say 1:30-2:20pm) in my office to discuss the slides
Project Group • Project group of 2/3 students conducts a substantial course project, where you will design and simulate some innovative aspect of self-managing computer systems
Project Timeline I • Project group is formed within the first 3 weeks, with a list of group members submitted to me by Jan 28 • Project topic is chosen by each group within the first 5 weeks
Project Timeline II • From the 6th week, each group will schedule a weekly 30-minute meeting with me to discuss progress and problems on your project • A 3-page project proposal is due on Mar 6 (the end of the 8th week)
Project Timeline III • Each group will give a 20-minute mid-term project presentation in class, on the week of Mar 7 • Each group will give a 40-minute final project presentation before/during the 15th week, tentatively: on Apr 22 Friday, Apr 25 Monday, Apr 27 Wednesday and Apr 29 Friday
Project Timeline IV • Final project is due on May 2, • Each group should have • A complete set of results, software artifacts, demos, or developed theoretical findings • A 10-page, two-column, 11/10pt font project report explaining the main contributions
Grading • Paper reviews 20% (up to 5% bonus) • Class participation 10% • Paper presentation 20% (2% bonus for 1st and 2nd student presenter) • Proposal & midterm presentation 10% • Project final presentation 10% • Project results and report 30%
