What is Muscle Reading? • Muscle Reading is a three-phase technique that one can use to accomplish information extraction. Each phase of the three phases has three steps.
What is one way to remember all nine steps? • One way to remember all nine steps is to memorize the following three short sentences: • Pry out questions • Root up answers. • Recite, review, and review again. • These sentences are an acrostic. The first letter of each word stands for one Muscle Reading process.

Step 1 Preview-survey material • Improved comprehension • Book/table of contents • Keep the preview short • Look for familiar concepts, facts, ideas • Ideas/spark imagination curiosity • How can material relate to your LTG • Inspect, drawings, charts, tables, graphs
Step 2 Outline • Amount of time on this step will vary • Complex material take time to understand structure • Study textbook chapter outlines • If not textbook chapter outlines make one • Section titles/paragraph headlines serve major/minor topics outline • Outlining makes complex information easier to understand
Step 3 Question • Ask yourself what you want from an assignment before you begin • Write down a list of questions • Turn chapter headings and section titles into questions • Purpose of asking questions is to get your brain involved • Questions formulated help you stay alert during difficult reading
Step 4 Read • Begin reading • Be with your reading in the now • Avoid marathon reading sessions • For difficult reading set shorter goals • Visualize the material • Read it aloud • Do not read in bed
Step 5 Underline • Use your text books • Making marks in a textbook creates signals for reviewing • Being physical with your books builds strong neural pathways • Underline only what is important • Underline sparingly less than 10 percent • Write in the margins of the text summary statements/questions
Step 6 Answer • Read get answers to your questions write them down fill outline
Step 7 Recite • Talk to yourself/friend about what you had read • Find a friend and teach your friend and have your friend teach you
Step 8 Review • Completely review within 24 hours so information will go from short term memory to long term memory • During review look over your notes clear up points • Recite main points • Relearn material
Step 9 Review again • Weekly or monthly review • Review using 3 by 5 cards • Reread difficult assignments • Schedule some review periods in advance • Keep your reviews short and do reviews often • Develop a habit of regular reviews
