Appendix A: Managing and Using Information from the Internet and the World Wide Web This section will help you: • Become familiar with major file types • Learn how to download images and other files from the Web
Common Types of Files on the Internet and the Web, with File Extensions • Text files (.txt, .asc, .doc, .pdf) • Data files (.xls, .wks) • Image files (.gif, .jpg, .tif) • Audio files (.au, .wav, .ra, .mp3) • Multimedia files (.mpg, .mov, .rm) • Compressed files (.zip, .gz)
Compressed Files • Examples: .zip, .gz • A file is compressed to save space on a server or to be transferred over the Internet more quickly • These files must be uncompressed to be used • To uncompress, use PKZIP or WinZip
