INTELLIGENT DESIGNGenetic Engineering R&D for the Advancement of Seasteading
Genetic engineering does not require seasteading, but genetic engineering will be essential to seasteaders.
Too Fast? Genes - Nucleic Acid Genetic Engineering Scientific alteration of the structure of genetic material in a living organism, employed for such purposes as creating bacteria that synthesize insulin. • Nucleic acids are biological molecules essential for life, and include DNA and RNA. Together with proteins, they function in encoding, transmitting and expressing genetic information.
HUMAN GENOME PROJECT • Completed in 2003, two years ahead of schedule and a half billion dollars under budget. • DEMONSTRATING THE FEASIBILITY OF G.E. R&D
NINE YEARS LATER • WHERE ARE THE SOLUTIONS TO GENETIC DEFECTS?
Fears • Blight • New allergens • Clone armies • Eugenics • Zombies • Decimation of farms • Loss of humanity • God will get jealous
Ignorance • The naturally chaotic alteration of genes pose virtually all the same risks that intelligent design does. • Humans have been using genetic engineering for thousands of years through breeding, hybridization and environment manipulation.
Status Quo • Civilization on land arose from agrarian cultures and is reluctant to adapt to the reality of the future. Many farmers and ranchers ironically fight and yet are dependent upon GE. • Religious movements sway heavy influence on land and many believe that genetic research is either a lie or a sin or some other abomination to be condemned. Their political clout will postpone GE adaptation on land by 10-20 years or more. • The medical industry favors treatments over cures, increased vitality via GE threatens drug dependency.
The Profitability • Genetic Engineering has diverse applications, it will be the backbone of many future concepts and will be a relevant field as long as life exists. • “Gene Therapy the Future of Medicine.” claims many medical journals and blogs. • The application of “pharming” alone is producing far greater supplies at lower costs than traditional methods of development. • Forbes magazine names “cognitive enhancement the next trillion dollar business.”
Headlines – May 2012 • Goats genetically engineered to produce drugs in their milk • Genetically engineered mice live longer with fewer age related diseases • Genetically engineered virus could convert mechanical stress into electric charge • Plastic-eating fungi found in Amazon • Living Technology – The Future of Architecture • Researchers identify protein necessary for behavioral flexibility • Gene Therapy is the future of Medicine • Cognitive enhancement will be a trillion dollar business
NOW AND THEN EARLY R&D FUTURE R&D CLONING AND HYBRIDIZATION OF SPECIES CUSTOMIZATION AND CREATION OF NEW SPECIES MACRO-ORGANISMS –LIVING TECHNOLOGY • ESTABLISH METHODS OF SIMULATION FOR GENETIC MODIFICATIONS • SOLVE PROBLEMS THAT HAVE MARKETABLE POTENTIAL ON LAND. • DECREASE OR ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR IMPORTED PRODUCTS ON SEASTEADS.
IMMEDIATE APPLICATIONS MEDICINE FOOD IN-VITRO MEATS CROP RESISTANCE TO PESTS, ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS IMPROVEMENTS IN TASTE AND NUTRITIONAL VALUES QUICKER AND LARGER YEILDS • TRANSGENICS • XENOTRANSPLANTATION • DRUG MANUFACTURING OR “PHARMING” • BETTER IMMUNE RESPONSE • LIFE EXTENSION • COGNITIVE ENHANCEMENT
Living Technology • Protocells in development to save the foundations of Venice are scheduled to be presented at the Times Cheltenham Science Festival this year. • Living buildings would have auto-regenerative abilities. • Nature strives to achieve homeostasis, we should construct with the same goal.
Intelligent Design • Wetglands are genetically engineered organs that perform specific functions such as: • Recycle waste (example: Plastic eating fungi) • Filter air and water (desalinize and oxidize) • Generate energy/food (solar flowers that glow at night, moss that gives off heat) • Production of raw material (a spider’s web is stronger than steel, a GE spider’s gland could grow tomorrow’s steel.)
Macro-Organisms • Convergence of intelligent design and living technology allows us the ability to “biofacture.” • Early seasteads will be vessels or platforms. Future seasteads will be living cities that are regenerative, and reproductive (facilitated asexually, lets not get carried away.) • Arcology (Architecture+Ecology) is the only sustainable building technology. Eventually, even on land, structures will be grown from organic material.
