  2. How do I do this? • There are different ways to take notes, but first you might want to gather your “tools”: A pencil/pen; A highlighter; Post-ItTMnotes; Note cards iPad apps.

  3. How do I use the tools? • Please remember that your TOOLS are not TOYS – note taking is a job and the tools are to help you complete the job. Don’t waste your time OR your materials.

  4. Using a Pencil • When you take notes with a pencil, it depends on if you have a COPY of the information (that you’re allowed to write on) or a note-card (to copy information on to) • If it’s a COPY • You can underline or circle important items • If it’s an original (like the BOOK!) • You can write down the important information on note cards or scrap paper • Just DON’T write down EVERYTHING!

  5. Here’s one example: Tigers living in tropical regions mate throughout the year. Tigers in the northern regions breed only in the winter months. Gestation (duration of pregnancy) is about four months. A mother usually gives birth to two to four cubs at a time. Cubs are about one foot (1/3 meter) long and weigh less than two pounds (3/4 kilograms) at birth. Until about age two, cubs are completely dependent on their mothers for food. At about age 2 1/2, the cubs leave their mother and her territory to find their own home range. (FROM SEARCHASAURUS) • Tigers are pregnant about 4 months • Tigers usually have 2 to 4 cubs • Tiger cubs are little, weighing less than 2 lbs. at birth • Tiger cubs live with their mothers until they’re @ 2 ½ years old My notes…

  6. If you’re using a highlighter… • The item that you are taking notes from must be a COPY of something (maybe a computer print-out) • DON’T highlight every word – that’s not the point; you only want the MOST IMPORTANT information to be highlighted

  8. So why just some words? • Highlighted words and phrases are usually those that contain DATA or specific thoughts that you couldn’t have come up with on your own. • Besides, if you write down EVERYTHING from the book, you’ll be plagiarizing or TAKING someone else’s work!

  9. Post-It Method • Let’s say you’re REALLY IN A HURRY • You’ve waited too long to begin (that’s a No-No, by the way) • Find the information you want to use and stick a Post-ItTM next to the text in the article or book • Number the Post-It’s in the order you want to present your information • Write down – in your own words – the information you want to share (on a separate sheet of paper) in the order that you gave to the Post-It’s This may be one of the fastest methods, but it is NOT recommended. Sometimes, however, we all find ourselves in a time crunch!

  10. Note Cards • These can be a very nice tool – especially when you’re organizing your final product • Write down just ONE FACT per card making sure you write down the source www.kyvl.org/searchasaurus #1 Tiger babies Takes about 4 months Usually 2 to 4 cubs Kind of little – about 2 lbs.

  11. Note Cards continued… • After you’ve gone through your resources and have a number of note cards, rearrange them in the order you want to present the information • You don’t have to keep them in the order that you took the notes… #6 #1 #3
