Civil Rights • 1950, Topeka – Oliver Brown wanted his 6-year-old daughter to go to Sumner Elementary • A few blocks from their house, but all white • Topeka Board of Education said no – had to attend Monroe Elementary across town • Parents petitioned the board, but still no • Took the case to court, Kansas judges said no • Appealed to the US Supreme Court • 1954 – said “separate but equal” was illegal

Individuals in the Limelight • Gordon Parks – photographer from Topeka • Showed his experience with segregation • Milburn Stone starred in Gunsmoke, a show that made Dodge City famous • Wilt Chamberlin from Lawrence – all-American basketball player for Kansas • Played in the NBA for 14 seasons • Jim Ryun – 1st high school student to break the 4 minute mile, silver medal in 1968

  5. Individuals in the Limelight • Gale Sayers – football star for Kansas and Chicago Bears • Barry Sanders – football star from Wichita who played for the Detroit Lions • Tom Watson – champion golfer from Kansas City – 5 time British Open winner

  6. Space Race • The US was racing with the Soviet Union to get a man on the moon • “Democracy vs. Communism” • US began the Apollo program to do this • Big setback – Apollo 6 caught fire and killed 3 • Apollo 13 eventually made it to the moon • Part of the module is in a museum in Hutchinson, KS

More Trouble With Nature • Mid-1970s brought more dust storms • High interest rates and falling crop prices • Low property values • Many farmers forced off land • Jan. 1979 – 2,000 farmers drove tractors onto the capital mall • President Jimmy Carter sent emergency aid • Unfortunately did not help – many small farms were lost • Big farms took over

The Energy Crisis • Caused panic for most of the country • Helped Kansas farmers survive the 1970s • War in the Middle East caused oil producing countries to restrict oil supplies • Kansas oil producers made record profits • Made the country look at alternative fuel resources • 1985 - Atomic energy at Wolf Creek Generating Station near Burlington, KS
