What were the origins, goals, and accomplishments of the nation’s youth movement? In the mid 1960’s, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) formed due to college students opposing the war. The SDS was one of the most vocal antiwar groups. By the end of 1965, the SDS had members on 124 college campuses across the country. In April 1965, SDS members led the first national antiwar demonstration. More than 20,000 marched to the Capitol where they delivered a petition demanding that lawmakers “act immediately to end the war.” Antiwar rallies on college campuses caused soldiers to shoot which killed 4 students at Kent State. Students and teachers went on strike causing colleges and universities to temporarily shut down. The voting age was lowered from 21 to 18, due to the 26th Amendment, which allowed for college students to vote and have a say.
