  1. THE DSM-IV(THE DIAGNOSTIC & STATISTICAL MANUAL OF MENTAL DISORDERS 4TH EDITION) www.behavenet.com

  2. WHEN IS IT A DISORDER? World Health Organization (WHO) reports (2008) that some 450 million people suffer from mental or behavioral disorders. Psychological disorders are patterns of thoughts, feelings or behaviors that are deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional. (Standards for “deviant” will vary by culture and time; for example, in the case of homosexuality.) To classify disorders, we use the DSM-IV (Fifth edition to be released in 2013.)

  3. BRIEF EXPLANATION • The DSM-IV attempts to assist in the diagnosis of mental disorders for those thoroughly trained in clinical psychology. The assessment is based on a multiaxial system consisting of 5 different axis on which people can be diagnosed. This is to allow for the most inclusive and thorough research into a patient’s history to provide the most thorough diagnosis.

  4. AXIS I • Clinical disorders which includes most psychological disorders such as mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, sleeping disorders and many more.

  5. AXIS II • Personality disorders and Mental retardation are included on axis II as this often occur in conjunction with axis I disorders and thereby should not be overlooked.

  6. AXIS III & IV • General medical conditions must also be considered as these often impact one’s mental state. • Psychosocial and environmental problems must be considered as well.

  7. AXIS V • Global assessment of functioning is also measure to establish one’s level of functioning in day to day life in light of the mental disorder.

  8. HOW IT WORKS: • One analyzed on all 5 axes may read something like the following: • I. 296.23 Major depressive disorder, single episode, severe without psychotic features • 305.00 Alcohol abuse • II. 301.6 Dependent personality disorder • Frequent use of denial • III. None • IV. Threat of job loss • V. GAF = 35 (current)
