Determining the Process • Every year we gather data to determine a process from application to interview for each level for the next year • Based on the data, steps are created for each level • The following is our process for the 2019-20 pools
The Application • Principals/Assistant Principals = Administrative App • Deans = Certified Application • SearchSoftapplication(s) is complete • Verify your information on each page is current • Update confidential references (including current supervisor and most previous supervisor), ensure they have been returned and are not older than 18 months • Attach and label Resume and Letter of Interest
The Application Continued • Attach your five most recent summative evaluations • Release of Records is attached (candidates who have not been with WCSD for the last consecutive 5 years) • Application attached to pool posting • No essay requirement in the application phase
Application Tips • Make sure your phone number and email are correct • We suggest you use your cell number as your primary contact • Label your attachments, so people know what they are: Resume, Evaluation 15-16, etc. • Remove all old and unnecessary attachments • Employment History is up to date and reflects your current and most previous supervisors (this is where we look to confirm confidential references) • Double check and triple check you are on the right application!! • Make sure you have attached to the pool posting
Applying • Attach application to Principal, Assistant Principal or Dean pool posting • You are applying for consideration for a hiring pool • Apply to the level you feel you are most prepared for! • Make sure you meet the minimum qualifications • Any questions or need reassurance, email Liz Sellers esellers@washoeschools.net
Principal Writing Sample • Prior to Level One Interview • You will be given a prompt with your interview invitation • Will be done on your own • Will be due 2 business days prior to interview • Completed as part of the interview process
Assistant Principal Writing Exercise • Considered part of the Level One screening • You will have 90 minutes to complete and this will take place at the Matley computer labs • Screened by a standing committee and scored anonymously by multiple readers for each candidate • When needed to verify a score, an additional reader will also score • Candidates selected for interview based on submissions
Principal Interview Rounds • Three rounds scheduled for Principal candidates only (two rounds all other levels) • Application deadlines: 9/17/18, 11/02/18, and 1/25/19 • Complete application must be received by 5:00 PM Pacific Time • Interview and Results: September, November, and February
AP and Dean Interview Rounds • Tworounds scheduled for Assistant Principal and Dean candidates • Application deadlines: 10/22/18 and 1/16/19 • Complete application must be received by 5:00 PM Pacific Time • Interview and Results: October, November, January and February
Level One Interview Process • Principal and Dean candidates who pass the paper screen will be invited to interview • Assistant Principal candidates who pass the paper screen and writing exercise will be invited to interview • Interview is for the pool • The interview is part of the screening process, just like application and Assistant Principal writing exercise • Short notice of date and time • Skype available
I’m in the Pool - What Now? • 4 years of eligibility – starts with 2018-19 school year • Committee determines if you are eligible for elementary, secondary or both – exception Deans (as of 2018-19) • Not a guarantee of an interview or a position – allows for schools to find the right fit • Need to apply to site specific positions that you are interested in and eligible for (typically March – June) • HR reviews applicants to ensure they are eligible (in the pool, elementary or secondary) • First 2 rounds of each level are opened internally first (ex: current AP can apply for other open AP positions) • Once it is opened externally (3-5 days) pool candidates can then apply
Level Two Interview Process • Site specific – must apply • Short notice – sometimes less than 24 hours • Generally at district office but not always • Possible to have multiple interviews in one day • Interview in rounds, starting with Principals • Committee should reflect diversity of student population • Coordinated by HR
Interview Decisions • Level One: Committee determines if the candidate moves forward for elementary, secondary, or both • Level Two: Committee and Area Superintendent make recommendations based upon the staff, parent, and student input • Final Decision: Made by the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent. Principal finalists interview with Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent.
Feedback and Communication • Most communication is done via email • Feedback • None on the application • Level One Interviews • Verbal and written from HR • Level Two Interviews • Area Superintendent or Site Principal • Appeals • Protocol/Procedure vs. I had a bad interview • Don’t interview if you have experienced a tragedy
Other Critical Information • Can only be screened once per hiring season per level • Level Two Interviews • You will be screened out if you apply to a position you are not eligible for
