Three Scenarios The following three scenarios look at situations which require leadership and management skills. Discuss in your group: • What are the management concerns? • What are the leadership concerns? • What is the best course of action?
Scenario 1 You are approached by your Head Teacher in September. He wants you to lead on designing the new curriculum for Foundation Learning at KS4 and selecting staff to teach it. He will expect a monthly report on progress, and a breakdown of cost. The new curriculum is due to be implemented next September.
Scenario 2 You are in a departmental meeting when you receive a message from reception: An angry parent is in reception and wants to talk to you about their child, whose book has not been marked for six weeks. They give you the teacher’s name.
Scenario 3 The mock-GCSE marks come back. Every student in set 2 has underperformed by at least one grade.
Skills and Attributes Skills – what do you need to be able to DO? Attributes – how do you need to ACT? Over the three scenarios, what skills and attributes does a Leader need to show?
Styles There are as many leadership styles as there are leaders, but they fall into three main camps; • Autocratic • Democratic • Delegative More Control Less Control
Gap Task Choose from: • Observe someone who you feel is an effective leader. What behaviours do they show? • Analyse the team that you work in – which of the nine ‘Belbin Roles’ are present? • Try three actions in a style different to your usual style. What effect does this have?
