WELCOME TO CESL ORIENTATION Fall 1 2019 – August 26 and 27
CESL Levels • Beginning: A0, A1, A2, A2+ • Intermediate: B1, B1+ • Advanced: B2 (+), University Preparation (for OU Track students only) • The tests you take today help us find the best level for you. • Your teachers will continue evaluating you in the first week. • Please talk to your teachers on the first day of class if you have any concerns about your level. • CEFR levels – for more information, see https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/table-1-cefr-3.3-common-reference-levels-global-scale

Teacher Office Hours • Meet with your morning teacher during theiroffice hours to discuss… • Schedule changes • Problems you are having in class • Questions about policies or homework • Information about Norman and Oklahoma • Remember - if you have a problem, talk to your morning teacher.
Afternoon Seminar Courses • One-Hour Seminars • Examples: Vocabulary,Public Speaking, Presentation Strategies • Two-Hour Seminars • These courses are for intermediate and advanced students. • Examples: U.S. History & Government,Global Citizenship
Test Preparation Courses: iBT and IELTS • 2-hour courses in TOEFL iBT and IELTS • Available to students in level B1 and above • You can only take 3 sessions of test prep courses while at CESL.
Bring Your Test Scores – IELTS and iBT • If you have already taken the IELTS or iBT, please bring us a copy of your scoreas soon as possible. • If you have registered to take an exam, please let us know what date you are taking the test.
OU Track • OU requires 2 successful sessions at the advanced level at CESL AND the following test scores for admission: • IELTS 5.5 or higher, or • TOEFL iBT 61 or higher • Graduate students, please check the OU website for the specific test requirements for your major. • If you have questions, please visit: • Brett Anderson, OU Track Coordinator– Cottage 406
Grading Policy • Students who make an A or B in every morning class will continue to the next level • Students who make a C in any morning class must remain in the same level • Students who make a D or F in any class are considered failing and must repeat the level • You will receive one final letter grade for each class at the end of every session.
Attendance Policy • F-1 Visa students: Attendance is mandatory and monitored. • 5 absences per class = maximum • 6 or more absences in one class will result in an automatic failing grade. • MORE THAN 8 consecutive absences can cause you to lose your F-1 visa status. • Talk to your teacher if you are absent. You have as many days as you were absent to make up missed homework for that day. • You cannot make up a missed test or quiz unless you have a documented medical excuse or a TOEFL/IELTS receipt.
Attendance Policy • If you arrive after class starts, you are considered late. • Being late to class 3 times = One absence • You are also considered absent if you arrive after… • 30 minutes in a 3-hour class (morning class) • 20 minutes in a 2-hour class (afternoon class) • 10 minutes in a 1-hour class (afternoon class)
Reasons for Expulsion • Failing three consecutive sessions due to grades or attendance • Students who fail three consecutive sessions may re-apply to CESL after successfully completing a session at another school. • Not paying for your classes by the due date • Disrespectful or disruptive behavior in class or towards teachers or other students • Extreme cases of cheating or plagiarism
Unacceptable Behaviors • The following behaviors are not permitted. We hope that these subjects never become an issue. • If you would like to speak privately to someone about these subjects, please talk to your team leader after the presentation.
Tobacco Policies • Smoking is not allowed at CESL or anywhere on the OU campus. • If you are caught smoking on campus you will be fined. This includes smoking in your parked car and outside of a school building.
Alcohol and Illegal Drugs • In the United States, you must be 21 years of age or older to drink. • However, even if you are 21, OU is a dry campus - alcohol is not allowed on any university property. • Two or more offenses in a semester mean you will have to leave OU. • Illegal drug use is prohibited on campus and in the state of Oklahoma.
Misconduct and Harassment • Misconduct means unacceptable behavior. Examples are…. • Invading personal space – don’t get too close without asking • Threatening someone – telling someone you will hurt them if they do not do what you want • Stalking – following someone or trying to force them to spend time with you • Discrimination – saying or acting like you are better than someone else because of their gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation. Everyone is equal here. • Misconduct and harassment will be reported and investigated.
Sexual Violence • Spoken consent must always be given before a sexual act. • Do not engage in sexual acts with someone who has been drinking. • If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, report the incident to the Campus Police, or tell a teacher you trust – they can help you.

Computers • Computer print stations are located in Cottage 404, 406, and 407. • Students may use these stations to print assignments and check their Canvas messages. • Food and drinks are not allowed. Print Station Hours: Monday-Thursday 8:15-8:45am 3:00-4:00pm

Student Parking • You must purchase a student parking permit to park on campus. • More information can be found on OU’s website: www.ou.edu/parking • You will get a ticket if you park at OU without a permit. • No parking permit? Park at Reaves Park on Jenkins Avenue or park at Lloyd Noble and ride the shuttle bus. • Some parking places at the forum are paid by the hour ($1.50/hour)
Driving in Oklahoma • A current, unexpired license from your home country is legal if it has your name on it. • You must take written and driving tests to get an Oklahoma driver’s license. • You must purchase car insurance if you own a car. • Remember: Driving without a valid license is illegal!

OU ID Cards • WHY: Use your ID to access OU facilities, campus bus, or online services • WHERE: Sooner Card Office -Student Union room 127 Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm OR StubbemanPlace, near Ratcliffe’s bookstoreMonday-Friday, 10:00 am-7:00 pm • YOU WILL NEED: Passport identification and $20
Medical Insurance for F-1 Visa Students • F-1 Visa Students: you already have OU medical insurance. It is included in your tuition and fees (or is part of your scholarship.) • Go to Goddard (the student health clinic) first, not the emergency room (See campus map - Building 40). • You should always keep your medical insurance card and OU ID with you to show when you need to go to the doctor. • You will receive your medical insurance card in the next few weeks.
CESL Student Responsibility • Attend all classes. • Buy and bring your required textbooks to class. • All books must be purchased by Monday of Week 2. • Practice English inside and outside of the classroom. • Participate in activities that will give you English practice. • Your grades are your responsibility.
U.S. Classroom Culture • Clothing and classrooms are friendly and informal. • All people are treated the same way before, during and after class. • Respect your teachers by coming to class on time, listening and participating during the lesson, and doing the work. • Respect your classmates by listening to other people’s ideas. Keep an open mind about different opinions. • Grades are not negotiable.
During a Lesson • Questions are expected and appreciated. • Discussion during class is required. Remember to speak, not just listen. • If you disagree with something, you can say so. Be polite. • Being wrong is okay. This is how we learn. • Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
