  4. ACADEMIC GAMES MIU4 League participation includes: • 25 out of 27 MIU4 Districts • 3 private schools • Crawford County – Penncrest, Conneaut • Venango County – Franklin, Valley Grove • Clarion County Schools • Open to Homeschoolers

  5. ACADEMIC GAMES • Fall Planning Meeting • 3 Trainings for Coordinators • 10 Days of Competition for Students (200 – 550 students/game) • Spring Wrap-up Meeting

  6. ACADEMIC GAMES • Teams – 5 players each • Age Divisions: Elementary (3-6) Middle (7-8) Junior (9-10) Senior (11-12)

  7. ACADEMIC GAMES • Students learn game in own schools • Online MIU4 registration by division • MIU4 Coordinator creates 3-player matches and makes table assignments • MIU4-designed software produces student nametags – ID #, School, Team Name, Table Assignments

  11. ACADEMIC GAMES On-SETS • Teaches spatial relationships and set theory • Players create/describe sets of objects: union, intersection, set difference, set complement, universe, null set

  12. ACADEMIC GAMES On-SETS • Each division level of competition introduces increasingly more difficult mathematical concepts for players • Adds age-appropriate variations • Players create solutions to challenge mathematical reasoning of other players.

  13. ACADEMIC GAMES Equations • Game of creative mathematics • Involves authentic learning experiences and problem-solving at its highest level • All grade levels use same rules

  14. ACADEMIC GAMES Equations • Each division of competition introduces increasingly more difficult mathematical concepts • Concepts (factorials, fractions, averages, negative numbers, decimals) are used in all age divisions

  15. ACADEMIC GAMES Equations • Higher age divisions use negative powers and roots, imaginary numbers, and may work in bases other than 10

  16. ACADEMIC GAMES LinguiSHTIK • Name came from 60’s and 70’s when people enjoyed doing their “ShtiK” • Language Arts game • Challenges players to improve grammar, vocabulary, spelling and writing skills

  17. ACADEMIC GAMES LinguiSHTIK • Players learn to compose better sentences with proper grammar application • Each division of competition introduces increasingly more difficult grammatical concepts for players to use

  18. ACADEMIC GAMES Propaganda • Players must recognize techniques of propaganda used in speaking and advertising • Players identify techniques of persuasion used by politicians, editorial writers, and in printed materials

  19. ACADEMIC GAMES Propaganda • Players must discern truth from smokescreens • Students learn to identify sixty common propaganda techniques

  20. ACADEMIC GAMES Presidents • Formerly called Mr. President • Fact-based game • Students answer questions about the personal and professional lives of U.S. Presidents

  21. ACADEMIC GAMES Presidents • Players learn how Presidents reacted to or changed the times in which they served • Students answer questions about the families and colleagues of Presidents

  22. ACADEMIC GAMES Presidents • Students learn how Presidents were affected by political climates surrounding them • Students develop an understanding of the historical context and other events in US history

  23. ACADEMIC GAMES World Events • Players learn about major political and cultural events of the most recent calendar year • Students research and select resources surrounding the given theme each year

  24. ACADEMIC GAMES World Events • Questions in the competition include Current Events and Themed Rounds of questions • Students use their own notes and other study materials for one round.

  25. ACADEMIC GAMES Supports Needed for Success • Coordinator for each school • Secretary (registration, communication with coordinators, compiling lists of students and age divisions) • MIU4 also uses a back-up secretary
