Road to WWII in Summary • Hitler’s agenda aggressively violates the Treaty of Versailles • Re-arming • Desire for Living Space • ANSCHLUSS!!! • Encourages Fascist Italy to violate Treaty of Versailles as well • Abyssinian War = Italy invades Ethiopia • Spanish Civil War: both Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany invade Spain to help Fascist Franco

Appeasement • Appeasement: giving into someone’s demands • Britain and France? • Huge economic problems • Tired from WWI, want to avoid war at all costs • America? • Great Depression • Isolationism: political involvement with other countries should be avoided • League Nations? • U.S. never joined it • Britain and France never wanted it • No one contributes to it

Crisis: The Sudetenland • 1939 Germany demands Sudetenland • Used to be part of Germany but taken by Treaty of Versailles • 3 million Germans live here • Now a Czechoslovakianborder area with Germany • Czechoslovakia set up to be main defense in eastern Europe to keep Germany surrounded and in check

The Munich Conference • France and Britain prepare for war to defend the Sudetenland • Mussolini suggests a conference in Munich (Germany) to resolve the crisis • Munich Conference • September 29, 1938 • All agree that Hitler can have Sudetenland as long as he respects all other existing borders
