Whatis a “Footprint”? Is defined at the impact level over the life cycle
Water footprint: 2 different approaches Accounting Environmental impacts
Accountingapproach LCA approach Weighted average of pollutant emissions in life cycle inventories (CF). A lower number is better than a higher number The number contains the complete assessment by an expert • Add different volumes of water without characterization factors (CF) • A lower footprint number can have higher impacts • Easy data • Intuitive
What if you have to chose between two products, same price, same function (accounting approach) Product A WFP 800 m3 Product B WFP 950 m3 • Blue water embrace underground and superficial water • It is not the same 1m3 from Egypt and 1m3 from Brazil • Grey water frequently related to nitrogen use only • Other emissions? Ecotoxicity? Water scarcity? Fact : The use of water has environmental impacts!
