  1. HIRE HEROES USA • Networking Workshop • Purpose: • Understanding general face-to-face networking skills and how to effectively incorporate LinkedIn.com into the job search.

  2. NETWORKING 101 What is Networking? Creating, building, and maintaining informal relationships with individuals who can assist you in learning more about your desired career profession, putting you in contact with an individual who is in a hiring position, being a voice to speak for you during the hiring process, and providing you with mentorship.

  3. TIPS FOR NETWORKING SUCCESS Basic Networking Process (OSU Career Services) Develop a list of contacts Prepare for the networking opportunity While you are networking After the networking session

  4. DEVELOP A LIST OF CONTACTS • Networking resources include friends, relatives, colleagues and acquaintances • Former employers, internship supervisors, transition coordinators, or volunteer work coordinators can supply information and other network sources • Additional networks exist through membership in professional and social organizations • Contacts can be made through networking events

  5. PREPARE FOR THE NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY • You will want to decide what you would like to learn about a particular position or industry before you begin networking and assess what you have to offer an employer • Prepare questions ahead of time for use in formal networking sessions • For informal situations, prepare a one-minute introduction, or self-marketing statement, and incorporate several key conversation points on which you would like to elaborate if the opportunity should present itself

  6. WHILE YOU ARE NETWORKING • Be ready to begin the conversation. • Have a one minute commercial about yourself • Have several key conversational points in mind to follow up who you are • Asking a simple question is often a great way to start a conversation‐ even a mundane question • Avoid politics, religion, and potential "hot topics" in initial conversations • Work the room alone • Often we attend functions with friends, bringing our social comfort with us, but you want to meet individuals on your own • Ask for the contact’s business card. You will need it after the networking event.

  7. AFTER THE NETWORKING SESSION • Always follow up promptly with a thank-you note • Send an email thanking the contact for their time • Instead of making it generic – focus on a specific conversation you two had • That will make them remember you! • Ask if you can continue to keep in contact with them as they have a lot to offer you during your transition • Always maintain records about the conversations you have with your contacts • Find these contacts through social media sites, but remember before you do…
