  1. “Bright spots in Haiti’s health care three years after quake” CNN Health by Elizabeth Cohen Brittany Bielat

  2. History • 12 January 2010 • 7.0 Magnitude on Richter Scale • 50+ aftershocks that were still over a 4.0 • 200,000 died • 300,000 injured • 1,000,000 homeless • One third of the hospital are still not functional • Recent Cholera outbreak that killed more than 7,000

  3. John Macdonald • 2011- Wanted to help earthquake victims so he plead case to donor at country club • Wound Clinic • 10,000 + patients • Project Medishare • Operates nation’s only critical care and trauma hospital • NICUs

  4. Economics • 3 out of the 4 medical schools were destroyed. The earthquake killed the entire second year class at the largest nursing school • Shifting supply inward for years in the future

  5. Economics • Malaria rates down from 5% to 1% from seven years ago • Children vaccination campaign reaches 90% of children under 9. • Helps to lower the demand and shift it inward for medical care.

  6. Economics • Although it seems the two shifts combined counteract each other the loss of supply seems to bear a much greater cost than the vaccinations can make up for.
