  1. What Does a Medical Assistant Do? If you’re looking for a medical career with a great salary and an excellent job outlook, consider becoming a Medical Assistant (MA). MAs perform both clinical and administrative tasks in a wide variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, private physician offices, and ambulatory care facilities. The role of the medical assistant is a fast-paced and highly varied one that involves both patient interaction and hands-on clinical work. While a specific set of responsibilities will vary by workplace and physician office, most MAs have certain core duties. MAs are usually full-time employees and can expect a demanding schedule that includes long shifts. As with most medical jobs, there are strict protocols that must be followed to ensure the safety of patients and employees. Medical assistants are usually trained on-the-job, but they must be quick learners in order to pick up the unique policies and procedures of their employers. This can include learning how to handle certain kinds of medications. Many MAs also act as receptionists and greet patients as they come into the office for their appointments. They will check them in, verify insurance and patient information and help them fill out any necessary forms. After the initial greeting, they will then take the patient back to an examination room where they will record their vital signs and conduct a patient interview. They may also be responsible for preparing and sterilizing medical instruments as well as preparing blood and urine samples for laboratory testing. Once the patient has left the exam room, the MA will then clean the room and put any equipment away before the next appointment. They will also update records and may send out phone, text or email reminders to patients about upcoming appointments. Medical assistants are also often required to call other doctors' offices for reports on patients, so strong communication skills are a must. Medical assistants will also be expected to maintain and keep track of medical supplies, ordering new supplies as needed and ensuring that all expired materials are properly disposed of. Depending on their employer, they may also be responsible for scheduling appointments, sending out test results to patients, and handling any billing or insurance related issues. MAs will also be expected to help doctors during a patient's physical exam by handing them tools, recording medical histories, and explaining any test results or treatments. This requires an excellent understanding of medical terminology and procedures, and the ability to understand what the doctor is saying. Strong record- keeping is also a must for this profession, and an attention to detail should be noted on your resume.
