Devastating Effect of Flood: Bihar 2008 • Approximately 16.5 million people have been displaced • 394,900 houses have collapsed, estimated value is Rs.4,502.4 million • rising the death toll to 419 [Govt. sources] • Population affected: 15.7 million • Numbers of Villages affected: 8,197 • No of Panchayats 2,252 • Numbers of Blocks Affected: 203

  3. DEVASTATING EFFECT OF FLOOD: BIHAR 2008 ARARIA AND SUPAUL, where Bhoruka is workign (The worst affected districts: Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura, Araria, Purnia & Katihar)

  4. Bihar Flood 2008: Response of Bhoruka • Working in Flood affected region since decade. • Having strong community network. • Flood relief activities supported by local community volunteers as well as from surrounding states. • Flood relief activities supported by

  5. PLANNING STAGE: DISCUSSION WITH LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS

  6. After Situational assessment involving local stakeholders, Bhrouka has developed three pronged strategies: • Camp: for immediate shelter and relief of Affected population. • Treatment supports: On various camps as well as emergency treatment. Facilities for Saline Infusion of Diarrhea patients available round the clock. • Emergency Relief: Where affecetd population yet to receive any relief materials.

  8. RELIEF CAMP AT JOGBANI • Starting from 400 population, reached up to 2000 population • Situated near Jogbani Police Station. • Nearly 105 tent and 11 temporary toilet facilities • Camp has taken over by government since third week of September 2008.

Support provide by Bhoruka in the relief camp                  - Nutritional support (2 meals and 1 breakfast).                 - Milk for under five children.                 - Milk and IFA for pregnant women.                 - Treatment support (at least three camps in a week).                 - Environmental sanitation through bleach, provision of soap.                 - Safe drinking water by Safenet                 - Necessary support for arrangement for Iftar and Saheri.

  13. REACHING OUT TO VILLAGES WHERE RELIEF TEAM OF BHORUKA WITH SUPPORT FROM HAS FIRST TO REACH AND ONLY TEAM PROVIDING RELIEF ON A REGULAR BASIS. Relief at this places can only reached by country boat.

  14. Providing emergency relief Road has been washed away in some places and beyond the points, in some villages, still peoples are living like in a island with practically no communication with external world. Bhoruka is first to reach in most of such places and regularly supplying relief.

  19. EMERGENCY RELIEF TO UNREACHED AREAS Only country boat can access there by sailing approx. 2 hours to the nearby villages, sometimes boat can not be sail through the flood water. Then, relief workers have to pull the boat.

  20. Sometimes, boat can not also sail through flood water, then relief team have to either walk or pull or push the boat to reach destination

  22. PEOPLES OF SUCH VILLAGES ARE COMING AND RETURN BACK AFTER COLLECTING THE RELIEF

  23. FUTURE ACTIVITIES: • Relief phase will gradually be over. • Need for Disaster mitigation and Disaster Preparedness for the community Current situation: Epidemic of Diarrohoea, Kalazar and other water & mosquito borne disease has started.

Need of the affected community Material support- Dry ration, (Rice, Chiwra, biscuits, packed eatables) Medicines, Candles, Fuel, Matchbox, Torch, Ropes, Bedsheets, clothing & footwear, Water purifier tablets or solutionsTarpaulins or thick polythene, Mosquito netsStoves, cooking and water storage utensils/buckets . Health Camps Safe drinking water Education: school buildings are damaged, Study materials/books for students, Reading books, support for crèche. Agriculture: crop seeds, Support for removal of sand Livestock: Fodders, Vaccination Rehabilitation of whole villages:
