  1. The rhetorical précis What is it and why you should have it in your tool box

What is a prÉcis? • The rhetorical précis formis a highly structured, four-sentence paragraph that records the essential rhetorical elements of a unit of spoken or written discourse, including the name of the speaker/writer, the context of the delivery, the major assertion, the mode of development and/or support. The stated and/or apparent purpose, and the relationship established between the speaker/writer and the audience. • It includes a lot of the same things you have been focusing on as you SOAPSTone.

  3. Purpose? • The purpose of the précis is to give as much information about the written work as possible in four sentences. The précis answers the basic who, what, where, when, how, why, and to whom about the rhetorical situation of the discourse.

  4. The form 1. Name of author, (optional: a phrase describing the author), category and title of work, a rhetorically accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “suggest,” “imply,” “claim”); and a THAT clause containing the major assertion (thesis statement or “promise” sentence) of that work. EX: In his essay, “A Victim,” child psychologist Bruno Bettelhem observes that refusal to act in accordance with the stereotype of the victim held by the persecutor may obtain relief for the victim.

  5. The form 1.   6. The form 2. An explanation of how the author develops and/or supports the thesis, usually in chronological order. EX: He illustrates by using his own experience as a prisoner in a German concentration camp during World War II to show that when he refused to play the role expected of him as a victim, persecution ceased, and he actually earned the respect of his persecutor.

  7. The form 3. A statement of the author’s apparent purpose, followed by an “in order to” phrase. EX: Bettelheim’s purpose is to reveal an important truth about human behavior that can be applied to other areas of role-playing not just victims and persecutors, in order to show that stereotyping is always incorrect.
