8. History of WebCT- 1995 WebCT was conceived and (initially) developed by Murray Goldberg
9. It all started with a grant
As Murray began his research he quickly recognized the acute need for the creation of an online course platform
Training in computer sciences + a love for teaching = WebCT
1995
10. 1995 As a platform WebCT was designed to
Make it easy for instructors to incorporate new & innovative technologies into instruction
Facilitate course preparation which would enrich students' learning experiences
11. 1995 For his development of WebCT, Murray won UBC’s prestigious teaching prize -- in his first year as a faculty member
12. 1997 Together with his teaching assistant Sasan Salari and UBC, Murray formed the company, WebCT Educational Technologies, to continue development of the course management system software, and to support its users
13. 1999 Universal Learning Technology (Boston, MA) merges with WebCT Learning Technologies
The new company is WebCT, Inc.
14. 2000 WebCT, Inc. launched WebCT.com, the e-Learning Hub
This site, used in combination with the WebCT course management tools, is intended to maximize the online teaching and learning experience for students and faculty alike

104. Closing Comments WebCT software provides a platform from which the non-programmer can upload and manage his or her files on the WWW
There is a learning curve, but once mastered new course creation, as well as revising and updating existing courses, can be accomplished quickly
105. Closing Comments I use WebCT with
Resident students to enhance delivery of my didactic materials
Distant students (nontraditional Doctor of Pharmacy Degree Program) to deliver all of my didactic material
106. My Most Important Finding Affirming the distance/online instruction literature
From F2F discussions & surveys I have administered to both groups of students, it is the interactivity that makes my online instruction engaging & well received
Accordingly, I constantly strive to increase the level of interactivity in my online material
107. Where To Go From Here... To assist you in the development and delivery of online instruction a number of URLs are included at the end of this presentation
If you would like some “hands on” experience with WebCT please consider signing up for one of the workshops on Tuesday morning or afternoon
