Current radar wind profilers • Four LAP3000 profilers • 915 MHz 400W • Boundary layer only • Mature technology • DBS Winds • 15 – 30 minutes Dynamo Project
Typically deployed with Integrated Sounding System (ISS) Diego Garcia, BIOT Wind Profiler R/V Revelle Wind Profiler
ISS Wind Profilers : 40+ projects • Wide range of science targets • But: • Inflexible • One size fits all Mobile ISS at PLOWS Toga-COARE IDASS Lantex Quad/MASS Reno-Basin LABEX ARM/OK Small-Cu/MS ACE-1 Flatland/LIFT Juneau BLX JETEX CASES-97&99 TOCS FASTEX Lake-ICE Forrest-ABL BAO Nauru-99 Atlas PROPHET Transitions VTMX ISPA FDI/JHU IMPROVE IHOP NAME SRP T-REX Metcrax Climode AHATS CPS PLOWS PCAPS DYNAMO DC3
449 MHz Modular Wind Profiler • Development to extend our wind profiler capabilities • Longer wavelength enables higher altitudes • Fast wind measurements (spaced antenna) • Modular to give more flexibility • Easy to deploy Hexagonal Module PCAPS Project
Modularity 3-module system 2 kW amp Profiles through boundary layer 7-module system 8kW or 16kW amp Profile to mid-troposphere Eventually 19-module system 16kW or 32kW Full troposphere to UTLS
Example: T-REX MISS ISS MAPR
Winter cold pool, Salt Lake valley 3-panel PCAPS deployment 915 MHz 449 MHz
3-panel 449 MHz Comparison with 915 MHz • 2 months • Altitude coverage 500m – 1km greater • Median abs diff ~ 1.5 m/s Winds percentage vs. Height 449 915 High 915 Low
7-panel Latest developments Expansion to 7 panels So far using: 2 kW TX amp 3 channel data system
915 cf 7-panel 449 915MHz high mode 449MHz 7-panel 7-panel 449 typically seeing 1 – 2 km higher
Rapid Winds Vertical velocity & 5 minute winds Note apparent waves
Current Work • Completing 7-panel system: • 7-channel data system • Dual 8kW amplifiers • Upgraded front-end boxes • Mounting frame • Analyzing tests • Limitations: • Limited range resolution (~ 150m) • Processing and algorithms need work • Can see higher than 915s, but not low gates • Clutter, RFI & artifact rejection
Next steps • RIM • Range IMaging • Enables improvement in range resolution • Small inter-pulse steps in wavelength • Aiming to go from 150 m down to < 50 m • Funds identified for RIM expert to visit next summer Improve processing Reduce lowest range gate Add diagnostics Mobile version (449 MISS) RASS (Radio Acoustic Sounding System)
Summary • Prototype systems working well - Promising technology • Completing seven antenna modules • One 7-panel profiler OR two 3-panel systems(Two BL or one mid-troposphere profiler) • Adding power (16kW) and data channels (3->7) • Approx 4 FTE years effort (Eng, SWE, Techs, Scientists) • Next Steps • Test deployments : capabilities and limits • Adding RIM • RASS, diagnostics, Mobile, lower gates, processing • Three user proposals received already • Front-Porch, DEEPWAVE, PECAN • Longer term: • Ship operations • Full 19-module system
