E N D
PURPOSE • To update the Portfolio Committee on progress made in Tourist Guide registration and transformation
PROGRESS SINCE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ACT • 9 Provincial Registrars appointed • More guiding associations showing interest in the new system • Tour Operators beginning to play a positive role in engaging registered guides • Quarterly meetings held by Registrars to discuss guiding issues
ROLE OF PROVINCIAL REGISTRARS • Develop training and development plans for tourist guides in their respective provinces • Organize establishment of representative associations in each province • Establish relationships with tour operators • Develop tourist guide transformation strategy in each province
TRANSFORMATION OF THE GUIDING SECTOR • DEAT to train 300 guides nationwide in 2003-2004 and additional 300 guides will be trained each year until 2006 • DEAT to train 60 HDI tourist guide trainers nationwide • Tour operators engaged in providing internships for new guides from disadvantaged backgrounds • 20 additional Amathuba students undergoing training in Germany • Opportunities for HDI training sourced by DEAT through inter-government bilaterals
CONCERNS • Delay of tourist guide certification • Assessment fees too high • Shortage of assessors in general • Shortage of HDI assessors • No HDI training providers in the guiding sector
