  4. Jesus’ mission • His mission • Reveal Himself as God's son come to redeem God's people • Offer Himself up as an atoning sacrifice • Reach all of God's people with this Gospel • His challenge • Self-imposed human limitations • Ministry of only 3 years • Limited to 30 AD technology and communications • His goal • To establish the church, the body of Christ. • To reach all of God's elect in every nation. • His methodology • First to select and mentor 12 ordinary men who will be able to evangelize, disciple and train others in the same task. • Then to turn them loose equipped with the Word and the Holy Spirit to disciple the nations. To replicate his work. • His orders: John 6:38-40

  5. John 6: 38-40 • For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. • And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. • For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

  6. Lesson #1 Defer to your leader

  7. John 12:27 • Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.

  8. Lesson #2 Focus on the inside, not the outside

  9. 1 Samuel 16:7 • Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

  14. Lesson #3 Allow people to have autonomy. Nobody likes a micromanager

  15. delegation

  16. Matthew 10:1 • Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.

  17. Matthew 17:15-18 • “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and is very ill; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. • "I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him." • And Jesus answered and said, "You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at once.

  18. Matthew 17:15-18 • Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not drive it out?" • And He said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. • " But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

  19. Lesson #4 Have your employees’ backs

  20. Matthew 15:1-8 • Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, "Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread." • And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? • "For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.

  21. Matthew 15:1-8 • "'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. • They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men. • Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. • What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.'

  22. Matthew 15:1-8 • Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this? • He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.   • Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit."

  23. Lesson #5 Always teach

  24. Great performance

  25. Luke 11:1-13 • Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, • "Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."

  26. Luke 11:1-13 • He said to them, "When you pray, say: "'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. • Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.

  27. Luke 11:1-13 • Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.' • "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything. • I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

  28. Luke 11:1-13 • "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you • For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. • "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? • Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? • If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

  29. Matthew 13:36-51 • Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field." • He answered, "The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.

  30. Matthew 13:36-51 • He who has ears, let him hear. "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. ” • Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. • "Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.

  31. Matthew 13:36-51 • This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. • "Have you understood all these things?" Jesus asked. "Yes," they replied.

  32. Lesson #6 Celebrate with your team

  33. John 21:1-15 • Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, • "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered. He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.

  34. John 21:1-15 • The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." • Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. • Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast."

  35. Lesson #7 Show some empathy

  36. John 20:25-29 • So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." • A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!”

  37. John 20:25-29 • Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." • Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" • Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

  38. Lesson #8 Engage them in the future

  39. John 14:1-3 • "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. • And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

  40. Matthew 28:18-20 • Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. • Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

  41. Luke 24:51-53 • While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven • Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy • And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

  42. John 21:15 • When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" • "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." • Jesus said, "Feed my lambs.“

  43. John 21:15 • When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" • "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." • Jesus said, "Feed my lambs.“
