Project Learning in Chemistry Key Issue: To make the school become a green environment Topic:Why are some plants not healthy Grade level:Secondary 4 CHAN KA YIN (BUDDHIST TAI HUNG COLLEGE)
The Scenario • related to their daily life • interesting • related to the students’ study. • Role play
How to test the soil • Their proposal • pH paper • pH meter • Litmus paper • Universal indicator • Soil test kit
To improve the soil • Neutralization • Fertilizer
How to test the soil? Presentation
Educational Objectives • Students are expected to achieve the following: • 1. Preparing a plan of work for testing soil pH. • 2. Communicating orally through participation in group work • 3. Conducting experiment to test soil pH by using their plan. • 4. Ability to use previously acquired background knowledge to solve the soil problem.
5. Able to justify the range of pH for growing healthy plant. • 6. Able to make a green environment. • 7. Devising and conducting experiment for making their own fertilizers. • 8. Understanding some experimental skills in doing paper chromatography. • 9. Cooperating as a member of a group.
Scientific concepts involved • 1. Acid and Base concept • 2. The pH value • 3. Neutralization • 4. Fertilizer • 5. Paper chromatography
Students’ Task • 1. Through the Internet or library search to find information and discuss with your group members for testing the soil pH. (Around Oct & Nov) • 2.Present your proposal for testing the soil pH (At the end of Nov) • 3.Actualizing your proposal in doing experiment for testing the soil pH (Around Dec) • 4.Take photographs of your group in doing experiments
5.An experimental report of the experiment in testing the soil pH. (Before the end of the 1st term) • 6. Growing your plant • 7. Find solution to improve the soil • 8.Discuss with your group members in order to devise and do an experiment of making fertilizer and do the report (Around Jan & Feb) • 9.Use the leaves of your plant to do paper chromatography and do the report (Mar)
10. Regular observation and care for your plant is needed. Take photographs of your growing plants at regular time. • 11. Present your whole process of doing such a project (May)
