  1. Is punctuation important?

  2. Ask yourself: is punctuation important? • Yes, it is important: • It doesn’t really matter if you use it or not: • No, is should not be used because it’s a waste of time:

  3. Group task: • Read the ‘Dear John’ letters on the following slides. Consider the differences and answer the questions for each letter. • What is the letter about? • What are Jane’s opinions of John? • What will make Jane forever happy? • Identify three different punctuation marks that have been used and explain why they have been used (give examples).

  4. Version 1 Dear John: I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we're apart. I can be forever happy--will you let me be yours? Jane

  5. Version 2 Dear John, I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people, who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me. For other men, I yearn. For you, I have no feelings whatsoever. When we're apart, I can be forever happy. Will you let me be? Yours, Jane

  6. So, what changed? • The only difference between the two letters is the use of punctuation, however; it has completely changed the meaning. • The next slides provide some funny examples of punctuation used incorrectly!

  7. How does the meaning of these two sentences change?

  8. How does the punctuation used affect this sentence? A teacher wrote the following sentence on the board and asked his class to punctuate it: Woman without her man is nothing. Half of the class punctuated the sentence in the following way: Woman: without her, man is nothing. The other half of the class responded with the following: Woman, without her man, is nothing.

  9. Where should the punctuation go in this sentence?

  10. Is punctuation important? • Punctuation is not really that important, right? WRONG! It's very important, and a tiny, misplaced comma or question mark can completely change the meaning of your sentence. • Consider the examples you have looked at; only the punctuation was changed and it altered the entire meaning.
