  1. Warm Up • Think of a time that you had to wait to get something that is important to you. It could be an object, like an ipod, or an event, like graduating from high school. How did waiting make you feel. Did you try to speed up the process somehow?

  2. Review of Booker T. Washington • Outlined his views on race relations in a speech at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta – “Atlanta Compromise” • Felt that black people should work to gain economic security before equal rights • Believed black people will “earn” equality

  3. Review of Booker T. Washington • Developed programs for job training and vocational skills at Tuskegee Institute • Asked whites to give job opportunities to black people • Was popular with white leaders in the North and South • Was unpopular with many black leaders

  4. With your group - 7 minutes • Think back to how we drew conclusions from Booker T. Washington’s background information. • Answer the background information questions about DuBois in order to prepare for reading.
