How it began, how it spread • It began with the ballads and songs of the British Isles, and then changed in content and personality as it grew in America. • Carter family did the first ever recording in the 1920’s. • Great depression and World War Two had a large effect on the spreading of country music beyond the south.

Defining the music • The history of Country music is full of artists that communicated realistic and sentimental lyrics. • The songs have been characterized as to be about love, death, religion, patriotism and current events. • Its values continue to connect with Americans today, just as they did with cowboys and farmers years ago.

Early Life • Johnny Cash was born Arkansas, on February 26, 1932 • Johnny began composing songs, his first at the age of 12 • While stationed in Germany, that he bought his first guitar. • "Folsom Prison Blues
Start to Stardom • Met Luther and Marshall Perkins • Auditioned for Sun Records in March 1955 • Signed to Sun as Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two, • Their first single, "Cry, Cry, Cry," became a moderate country hit
Changes • Group added a drummer and became Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three • August 1958 group switched to Columbia Records • After moving to California, Cash started working with June Carter • 1963 “Ring of Fire”
Late Life • Died September 12, 2003 • Johnny Cash is known an the first international country star • He won 7 Grammy Awards
