  2. This activity will help you to support your child to... • develop their understanding of products, materials and processes. • be able to look at a product and make observations of why products are developed for a particular use. • gain an understanding of keywords used in Product Design.

  3. You can help your child by… Discussing with them the following questions – Who would use this product? Why has it been designed in a particular way? Why have the materials been selected? How does the product function (work)?

  4. When designing any new product it is important to understand existing products that are in the market place. Using the example provided below try to complete the Product Analysis. ACCESS FM Aesthetics, what does the product look like? Material, what is the product made from? Cost, how much does the product cost? Function, what is the product designed to do? Customer, who would buy or use the product? Safety, are there any risks during normal use? Environment, where would the product be used? Size, how big or small is the product?

  5. How successful were you? Material, it has been manufactured from polypropylene. This can be seen on the underneath by the symbol PP. This plastic can be recycled and is easily shaped Aesthetics, this product has a dark backgroundcolour to appeal to a male customer. Safety, the product designed to have all rounded edges. It has a re-sealable lid to prevent any leakages. Easy to transport and carry Environment, designed to be used in a wet area and can be carried in a sports bag. Size, this product is hand sized due to its intended use. The grip size will be determined using hand dimensions.
