Incorporating Quotations Into your own writing--Part 1 CCU Writing Center
What is incorporation? • Inserting a quotation into your own writing. • Making the quotation a part of your own writing, not just something added to it. Example: In a recent study on the effects of coffee drinking, researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that one cup per day “was associated with a 6% lower risk of dying among men and a 5% lower risk among women” (Gardner).
The Whole Passage Even moderate coffee consumption was linked to better survival odds. Drinking a single cup per day -- which was much more common than a six-cup-a-day habit -- was associated with a 6% lower risk of dying among men and a 5% lower risk among women. Compare Poorly Incorporated: Scientists recently discovered something surprising about coffee, “Drinking a single cup per day … was associated with a 6% lower risk of dying among men and a 5% lower risk among women” (Gardner). Fully Integrated: In a recent study on the effects of coffee drinking, researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that one cup per day “was associated with a 6% lower risk of dying among men and a 5% lower risk among women” (Gardner).
4 Principles • Attribution—Identify who said or wrote it. • Limitation—Find the unique words and phrases that you could not adequately paraphrase. • Integration—Insert the quotation into one of your own sentences. Don’t just add it on at the end of a sentence. Never insert a quote by itself as its own sentence. • Documentation—Identify where you found the quotation. (Formats vary.)
Attribution • President Obama said, “_____.” • Conway’s Chief of Police commented, “_____.” • The judge referred to the law as “_____.” • A student at the game felt that “_____.” • The Chair of the department called the decision, “_____.”
Synonyms for “said” • asked • added • announced • asserted • advised • affirmed • answered • acknowledged Can you think of five more? Ten more?
The basic form _________ said/wrote/texted, “__________.” • The lawyer claimed, “________.” • My teacher asked, “________.” • One student wondered, “________.”
Limitation Original Text: “Even moderate coffee consumption was linked to better survival odds. Drinking a single cup per day -- which was much more common than a six-cup-a-day habit -- was associated with a 6% lower risk of dying among men and a 5% lower risk among women.” Quotable Part: “associated with a 6% lower risk of dying among men and a 5% lower risk among women”
Integration The sentence should sound correct if you took the quotation marks away. Do not just add quotations at the end. Well Integrated: The mayor called the situation “hopeless and beyond repair.” Poorly Integrated: The mayor described the situation, “It is hopeless and beyond repair.”
