All four parts • Attribution • Limitation • Integration • Documentation In a recent study on the effects of coffee drinking, researchers at the National Institutes of Health foundthat one cup per day “was associated with a 6% lower risk of dying among men and a 5% lower risk among women” (Gardner).

3. The Situation A teacher asks you to analyze President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address and to consider the Republican response to that Address in your analysis.

4. Ideas, ideas, ideas • The economy/the recession • Manufacturing • Jobs and unemployment • Tax policy • Energy issues • Education issues

5. Your Plan To show how President Obama persuades his audience to be optimistic about the potential for change in this country. He accomplishes this goal by using hopeful and positive language to describe his vision for: • the energy crisis • the economy • education He also uses negative and pessimistic language to describe the ideas of his opponents and his predecessors.

6. An Important Passage From Pres. Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address: “We’ve subsidized oil companies for a century. That’s long enough. It’s time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that rarely has been more profitable, and double-down on a clean energy industry that never has been more promising. Pass clean energy tax credits. Create these jobs.” Which words and phrases would you use from this?

Put it all together • President Obama described government subsidies of the oil industry as “taxpayer giveaways” and said that it is time to “double down on a clean energy industry that has never been more promising.” And-- • Mr. Obama called on congressional leaders to “Pass clean energy credits” and almost begged them to “Create these jobs.”
