Mathematical AnalysisCollaborative Jennifer McBeth 10:00-11:00 Room 401
Outcomes Participants will: • Engage in a math task • Engage in collaborative planning
Building a Collaborative In Edmodo: • Get access to presentation files • Get access to formative assessment items (coming soon!) • Share your great ideas with other teachers and get their ideas/resources too!
Edmodo: Sign-In or Sign-Up • Go to http://hcpss.edmodo.com • Sign-in (if you have an account) or Sign-up as a teacher. • Enter your school code. • Select a username and password. • Sign up
Warm-Up: Ant Marching • An ant of negligible size walks out a distance of 1 from the origin, down the x-axis. It then turns left and goes up 1/2 from its current point. If the ant continues turning left, going the half the distance it previously went, and repeating the pattern, where does the ant eventually end up? • Develop a strategy to solve the problem. • Be prepared to share your strategy with the group.
Group Discussion Part I • What strategy did you create? • Why did you select that strategy? • How might this be incorporated into Unit 1?
Group Discussion Part II • How might students approach this problem? • What are the main mathematical concepts/skill necessary for this task? • How might this task be used in instruction?
Collaborative Planning • Form small groups and begin to look through Unit 1 resources. • What are the essential understandings students should have developed by the end of the unit? • How will you structure your time (long range plan)? • How will you pre-assess what students may already know? • What tasks/lessons do you plan to use? • What else do you need?
Group Discussion What insights have you gained from reviewing the resources and thinking about your plans for Unit 1?
Math Gatherings • Opportunities to collaborate with other teachers, receive “Just in Time” PD, and attend learning labs to watch tasks implemented with actual students. • Will be held one Wednesday a month. • Individuals who register in advance and attend at least 2 hours will be paid workshop wages! (Registration link in Edmodo)!
Math Gatherings--Dates • Wednesday, September 12th @Dunloggin MS • Wednesday, October 10th @Wilde Lake HS • Wednesday, November 14th • Wednesday, December 12th • Wednesday, January 9th • Wednesday, February 20th • Wednesday, March 13th • Thursday, April 25th (afternoon of Spring PD Day) • Wednesday, May 8th
