1. Ask for help!!!! • Do not assume anyone automatically knows you need it! There are many around you willing to help you-YOU have to reach out to them. It also builds great relationships!
2. Load up on notecards and chocolate! Nothing says “thank you” quite like chocolate!
3. NO! Learn the word “no.” Say the word “no.” Smile when you say it It is very easy to over-commit!
4. Overplan, overplan, overplan • My sub book • Use one of your copies of your roster to highlight students that can be helpful to the sub. Sometimes using students that you struggle with can help them feel needed and held accountable. “It is hard to build leaders when you refuse to give them ways to lead.” –I don’t remember
5. Print several copies of your roster. • Beginning of school and for sub: make notes on what name the students go by. • Use as a check off for signed papers being turned in, permission slips, any money turned in. • Also good to make notes for HW passes, late work turned in, etc.
6. Keep a journal Some uses : Use for each class to keep track of what works and what doesn’t. Use for notes about discipline. When you need to vent
7. Keep snacks and water in your desk. There will be many times you would rather get caught up on something or remember something you needed to do for prep. Students, parents and meetings can also interfere with lunch and planning times. STAY HYDRATED.
8. You will not have as many instructional days as you think you will! Some examples of this are: Assemblies Field trips Pep rallies TESTING Inclement weather Illness Tragedy Competitions Be flexible!!!! Be ready for the unexpected. Just remember- it will all be okay!!!
9. Be organized from the beginning. Papers with no names Missed work Make up work Color code classes Folder with nothing but “extra” work for when some students finish before others. Handwritten calendar and phone calendar
10. Be friends with the non-instructional staff!! Cafeteria staff Cleaning/janitorial staff IT staff Office staff
11. Classroom Management • Do NOT argue with a student!!! Shut them down. • Say what you mean and mean what you say. • My philosophy that worked: This is MY classroom…not yours. It is like my home. I set the rules, boundaries and punishment within the guidelines set forth by my district. Respect my classroom, it’s belongings as well as my authority in it. If you do, you will have a wonderful year…..if you do not, you may not stay.
14. DON’T BE HARD ON YOURSELF!!! You have been chosen to be a part of children’s lives that they will never forget. You will do great!!!!!
