  2. Look around you! Primates, everywhere you look. Yes, we humans are primates. And so are…

  3. lemurs, monkeys, and apes.

  4. What are some differences between those three species?

  5. Lemurs are members of a group of primates known as prosimians.

  6. Their name comes from a Latin word for ‘ghosts’. Lemurs’ large, reflective eyes and haunting, mournful cries suggest ghost-like traits. 7. Let’s learn about orangutans, chimpanzees, and gorillas. They are also known as the ‘great apes’. Before we view a short video, let’s consider these questions…(answer key on last slide)

  8. What is the pouch below an orangutan’s throat used for? As they clamber through the forest, how many holds do orangutans usually have on branches?

  9. How can you tell when a gorilla is aging? How tall is the average male gorilla? What is the ratio of the weight of the average male gorilla to the average female gorilla’s?

  10. Chimpanzees produce at least ____ different sounds to communicate comfort, anger, fear, and other emotions. Click on the speaker. Chimps have lifelong _______ and lifelong __________. What is the ratio of an average chimp’s height to an average gorilla’s?

  11. Insert the following video clip from Discovery Education Streaming: Video title:Elementary Video Adventures: Animals in the Wild Clip title: Orangutans, Gorillas, and Chimpanzees

  12. What about monkeys? What sets them apart from other primates?

  13. ÖThey have tails. Ö Most monkeys cannot swing from branch to branch, as apes and humans can, because their shoulder bones have a different structure. (They run along the tops of branches.) Ö Their skeletons more closely resembles dogs’ and cats’.

  14. Insert the following video clip from Discovery Education Streaming: Video title:Animal Discovery Fun for Kids: Marine Mammals & Monkey Business Clip title: Monkeys

  15. Answer key: Slide 8* The pouch is used to send ‘calls’ (a short series of sounds followed by a bellow) out great distances.* Orangutans generally establish three holds as they move through trees and branches. Slide 9* The amount of silver fur on a gorilla’s lower back is one indicator of age. (i.e. Blackbacks are younger than silverbacks.) * The average male gorilla is 6 feet tall.* The ratio of the adult male gorilla’s weight to the females: 2:1 (400:200) Slide 10* Chimpanzees produce at least 32 different sounds to communicate * Chimps have lifelong friends and lifelong enemies.* The ratio of an average chimp’s height to an average gorilla’s: 5:6 (feet)
